10.Feedback

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_169894186375326
I made a FaceBook group for my peers to give me feedback on what they like/don't like and if they would buy it etc. I think getting feedback is good as it gives a real evaluation and different opinions from my main target audience and the consumers of the music magazines that is similar to mine. Many of the people that are part of the group are also writing a music magazine so getting feedback from them also helps them to think about theirs and what they would do differently.
Through feedback from both the FaceBook group and videoed interviews, many of the comments were positive and by the initial target audience which was a good thing!

Using different forms of media for feedback also shows my experimentation with different media formats like cameras and social networking sites, which my magazine employs to realte and attract my target audience!

9.Evaluation of the Finished Magazine

I decided to make a PowerPoint presentation to reflect upon and evaluate my final magazine. I am very pleased with the finshed outcome and the way it looks!

Finally, my project as whole I think was a success and in order to make the magazine, a lot of research and planning is needed. I think my design is simple but compared to many music magazines avialble, it has a different appeal than most!

8.Planning and Evaluation of the article

In this article from an NME issue, it is writing from 3rd person as if the writer is imagining what Ellie Goulding feels when she wakes up. There is a use of romanticised language in here with word like "glitter" and "constellations". It then takes bit from the interview and quotes things she may have said before, "My God. What is that?" I feel that the tone of the article can be humorous in places by describing her actions "cartoonish". However using romantic language emphasises the serious tone of her popularity. It is informative but at the same time has an informal tone. I like the way this article is laid out and the way the language fits the artist. I think this is the sort of writing tone I would like to use. One that is informative, but fun and flows with informality. I like the idea of writing how the artist felt at the time and looking at it from 3rd person. This was a mixture of a review and an interview. A review as it is reviewing how the artist became famous and an interview by adding quotes/ things that have been said in an interview.
In the article above for SMASH HITS magazine, it is very different to the NME interview. Here it starts with a clear introduction about the band and straight into telling the reader who they are and what they are about. This magazine article was written in the 1990's so styles of writing have changed up to recent times. It takes on a more humorous tone to reflect the artist's humour from both the writer and the artist, "horrible trouserwear". I think the writer is witty in his comments about the band and in the introduction states them as "dishy". This creates a humorous tone and it seems like the writer is playing around with words to make an informal tone and can make the reader feel relaxed and laugh! Compared to the NME article, it has a completely different layout and one block colour. The writer doesn't display any of the questions the interviewer may have asked, instead they layout big sub titles in a bigger font and in a different colour to the body text about them and then goes onto say something to do with the sub title for example "THEY WANT TO SAVE THE WORLD!" ..."Our aims are to reconcile the Russians and Americans and eradicate all diseases and...that's about it. I can't think of anything else." I think this tone is very humorous and the band member uses language which seems higher to his normal talk and seems as though he is kind of joking around and making fun out of problems in the world. The writer includes every detail of what the band is saying which I think it is cleverly done as it is not too much, but still enough to give out to the reader who the band are and what they do, what they're like etc.

They are two very contrasting articles, the language is very different and the tone, the same as the layout. The NME article doesn't use any pictures of the artist whereas the Smash hits uses two, one of the band with an insert of who they are "left to right", and example of what they consider "art" using a painter's work, which even visually sets an immediate tone for the reader of humour. The contrasting articles shows how much time has moved forward about appreciating different audience's. The SMASH HITS in the 90's is completely different to what it is now as the article I picked seems more adult appropriate rather than young teens. However today it is considered a tweeny magazine designed for a younger audience.

Ideas for my article - it may change once i place it into InDesign as it may need to be shortened etc to fit the frames. (Main body)

"After appearing at THE NOISE! Awards, Nathon P gives us the lowdown for his plans in 2010.

"Ah man, words actually can't explain THE NOISE! Awards and the high I'm on from it! It was crazy how one minute I'm a local club singer and the next, I'm performing at the best gig I've done yet".

He performed two songs, written by himself, played by himself - Slow Worm and Burning Down Bricks were the show stopper songs that closed the event. Recently featured on both Channel AKA and NME, he is certainly an artist that attracts a widespread audience. Clashing a variety of genres including Grime, Acoustic and Barbershop, he is sure to reach the charts in no time.

"I love being unknown because it makes the intimate gigs worthwhile, but at the same time, I want to share my music with fans that like all the UK sounds, and you know, maybe even the world someday!"

Since his appearance at the Awards, many artists that attended the event have caught up with the multi-talented and lyrical singer.

"Jamie T is my biggest inspiration and I was starstruck when he approached me at the after party. I know his songs word for word and occasionally use the lyrics from Pacemaker in my songs. His words are so meaningful and something you can enjoy!"

He cheekily adds "Who knows! Maybe we'll collaborate someday."

To THE NOISE! that sounds like exciting news!

His songs are free to download on his Myspace and we recommend Time that he wrote for all the team here at THE NOISE!We expect great things in the new year with an album Young Dumb and Beautiful set to sail in the summer months. A perfect treat nonetheless to spend those lazy summer days listening to Nathon P".

Lyrics for Time song.

"Time time time goes by everyday I'm feeling good and its my time

for the show lights to come on when I appear

on the stage i be show stopping

so many beats that i be dr-dr-dropping

the one day THE NOISE! comes up kn-kn-knocking

for ma beats and rhymes to come alive"

Will this feature on the album The Young Dumb and Beautiful?"

I think the language used in the article matches the video interviews I researched and something that a wide range of people would understand and relevant to the younger audience!

It is all informative and matches what was said on the contents and the front page creating formality and a flow in the magazine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0vd1HSZXD4

I looked up on YouTube interviews of Jamie T and artists that are in the similar genre of the chosen artist that I'm wiring my article about. I used the tone of voice to reflect how those artists talk and their mannerisms as it mirrored the raw and grittiness of the image and the dull colours. In a very broad stereotypical way, this is how the public view artists like("Chavs") so playing on this in the tone of my article think is effective and would entice the audience (especially a British one) to look
Nathon P up.
The lyrics to the song that is featured I thought reflected the relationship the artist and the magazine have as many of these types of artists are grateful to their publishers etc. and stress in their song lyrics about their background and how they became famous.

"A fresh face to the music scene entered the stage, with just his hat and his guitar, he said "Hello" then there was a pause. The lights dimmed and there came the strum of his guitar and the beat from the pedal."

7.Photo Editing

This is the edited image for my front cover using PhotoShop.

I feel that this matches my colour theme of my front cover as behind the picture it is a white background. To make it striking I added coloured text that matches the event ie. bright, fluorescent and colourful. I also really like this image because its looking directly to the reader and enticing them read and find out where this was taken!

I had a lot of fun taking my photographs and experimenting however I feel a little tight on photos so I might take a few more and decide later. I like the lighting and the fact the image is showing most of his face, reflects on my preferred audience of parties and gigs and drinking.

This is the edited image that will be the background for the double page spread. I toned the brightness down slightly and the contrast up, and desaturated it half way in PhotoShop to give the image a more edgier and grittier appeal to reflect the music artist. Weirdly enough, after I shot this photograph, I looked up images of Jamie T (who a similar artist in the genre of music Nathon P plays) and there was a photograph that looked very similar!

I edited this image further and got rid of the wallpaper as it didn't match the 'Rock 'n' Roll' theme I wanted to convey. I used the patch tool to move the small designs on the wallpaper but kept the clock as it fits in with the lyrics of the song.
The grey/dullness of the image fits in with the rest of the colour theme of the whole magazine.

I think this issue is more aimed towards men however as the colours and all the pictures contain men and have a masculine feel. This wasn't how I planned to have the images however, in order for it to all work I had to make slight changes. Although, the artist will appeal to both men and women as the fanbase for Jamie T is mixed.

However, this image is very bright and a different setting to my image so that's why I decided to make it look darker and mirror the theme of colours on my double page spread.

6.Photos

I will be using both of these images as they are for my double page spread interview! One will feature on the contents page and one for the inside. I will edit them to look more professional however only slightly as they are going to match the genre and style of music 'Nathon P' performs. I really like the images as they are different to my front cover which makes eye contact with the reader. I might use another image of him looking at the camera if I have room, or which one looks better with the layout.

This is another image of Nathon P, the chosen artist I have decided to write about. I like this image as it shows a person who smoking and rebelling in a public place. Someone who is not afraid to break the boundaries such as iconic figures like the Sex Pistols and Pete Doherty. I don't think this is the greatest photograph, however, it matches similar looking photographs like those of 'Jamie T'.

I think it will connect with my target audience for partying and gigging. I think his pose shows he is comfortable and eager to do well and be successful but at the same time with an attitude of "not bothered". I like the fact it is a close up shoot of his face, I feel if it was a full body shoot it wouldn't have the same effect. This image is one that i might also use for the double page spread, as I have seen in many NME spreads, the photogrpah covers the whole 2 page with writing over the top. That could work similarly well with this article.

I may use this image as a photograph for the use of a subheading or an added picture on the double page spread.

This photograph I don't want to use as it isn't a clear professional shot of a group. This was during my experimentation of taking photographs for my magazine. Whilst I was shooting I didn't have a clear idea of how I wanted people to be placed in relation to the camera as I am a bit shy at telling people what to and where to go. I think it's a good picture but not formal enough for my magazine and to have a professional image I want my magazine to have. I think it would be enticing for the audience as they have an individual and unique style with the matching tartan, but i don't feel it is a serious enough image. I felt that when I took the photograph, to have all of the band members in tartan gave a formality of the band and to show through their individual music style the may play. However with the background not being very good, I did not want to use this one. The poses give out some attitude and maybe show some interest to the reader of what sort of music they play and may relate to other individual people with an alternative taste in fashion and music. I like the way the band members are placed in relation to the foreground. It shows the leader of the band and the two playing instruments in the background look great there as they may not be the main attraction of the band. I think it is interesting to have a female in with a two male band and would attract to my audience of diversity in music.

This is a picture of the spaniel's ears playing and I really like the lighting and how it captures the guitarists and the singers. I wanted them to pose with all of them playing their instruments as they are a real band and prefer to take pictures with them playing rather than posing formally as they are not that confident. I think this shows in this image however, the background of the intimate gig reflects upon my audience as these are the sorts of gigs I would imagine they would go to. It fits the criteria of the audience I want to attract. The lighting is clear however it is in a pub and you can see a slot machine game. It doesn't look right and fit with the image.

These two images are of the witch- hunt and I placed them around the room as if it was a professional shoot. This was good experience for me for when I want to work in the media and work with real bands and well known artists. I felt more confident in this shoot rather than my first try as I learnt I have to be firm. However, these photographs don't look too serious but I think this is to demonstrate the band's quirky music taste and style. They are a rock band that are all different to each other so I thought something random would reflect this. I like the lighting in this photograph however it has a slight orange glow as i didn't use the flash. But when I used the flash it then became too bright so it was hard to find a balance. I feel my audience would like to see a band like this as they look comfortable and relaxed in who they are and I think people would enjoy their music!

This image I took at a gig I went to of the spaniel's ears. I want to show this on the double page spread as both bands link together as they are friends. I think the audience I am aiming for who also might want to form a band will see how to build connections with people and maybe inspire them. I love the background being a skyline image of New York, it shows that they are keen to go places and become successful. I feel it would attract my audience if they wanted to start a band and show that you have to start at the bottom to work your way up. To show that anything is possible reflecting on the first image I took to the later image. It shows they are more confident and I feel if I used both images it would contrast to show how a band starts and ends up!

I want to take pictures of local and upcoming bands such as my friend's band The Witch-hunt, and Spaniel's ears. I want to use one of the two photographs for my front cover and then the double page spread will be about them. I take about 10 photographs but I don't know how many I want to use. I think about 6 photos will be good enough, for main sells on the front cover and my contents page. I also want to include some pictures on the double page spread to advertise what is also in the magazine or in the next issue.
I have decided not to use a picture of a band as my front cover, instead I chose to use a photograph of one of me and my friend's to use a front cover at a gig we went to. This will be for the article about the Noise! Awards and what people thought about it. The band headlining the event will be the article of the double page spread - Nathon P. The other photographs I want to use for the main sells and advertisement on the contents page and double page spread. They will be like navigators for the audience when they see it to see if they actually want to buy it and it interests them. I chose this picture as it is relevant to the youth culture of raves, parties and gigs. I edited this photo in photo shop to make it look like a professional photograph. I feel it sets a good example as to what audience I want my magazine to be aimed at.

5.Fonts

I am thinking about using both serif and sans serif fonts for my front cover/contents and double page spread. this won't be used on the main body text for the article as sometimes this can be hard to read. thinking about my ideal audience also, this will seem to informal if I used it everywhere. I want to use some serif fonts i want to give it a retro feel like an iconic music magazine such as Rolling Stone. I have thought about colour and for the fonts i will be using mainly black/red/navy. The other colours, red and yellow will be used for fonts for the masthead, heading and titles. It will appeal to my target audience as I want it to attract a wide spread audience that like music influenced by iconic bands such as the Beatles which is where the retro and old fashioned vintage font come into it. I want some in bold for the Drop cap and mastheads etc. The text body I feel would be better as standard as then it is still easy to read. Quotes and some of the interview will be put in italics as people can identify them as quotes. I haven't decided a particular specific font yet as I haven't finished browsing and experimenting. I know I want my masthead to be a font from a website that I can download onto a computer and have one that stands out. It will be in either yellow and black, or black and red. I feel these are attractive and appealing coloured fonts for my target audience as it doesn't give it a specific gender to be aimed at which was what I was wanting.

These three fonts are for my main masthead. I like all three but I think I will choose the first one it is written like a glow stick onto a dark background and I feel this would relate to my target audience as I want it to appeal to people who got to events like Global Gathering and Reading festivals etc.

This is the name of the artist. I will either use this font or Bohemian typewriter, depending on which picture I choose for my double page spread and what matches it. (Amsterdam Graffiti http://www.dafont.com/)

These are other fonts I have decided to choose for my contents page and double page spread headlines. I browsed a lot over different font websites but I decided to use http://www.dafont.com/, this is because it had all sorts of different styles of fonts that can create lots of different moods to the magazine. The two out of these samples I like best were 'GF ORDNER' and 'THE NOISE' which is a font I chose for my front cover masthead, The noise is the name of the magazine. I edited the colours form the original to make it the colour scheme I am using which is Red and Black.

These fonts are more of the choices for main heading/subheadings/ taglines on my 4 pages. I have picked a selection of serif and sans serif fonts to choose from. I will pick one that best suits the images and that compliments it. As I couldn't get my fonts to be placed in the Indesign Fonts, I copied and pasted them into paint and cropped them down to be fitted with space I made in Indesign. I have made it blend in with my colour scheme of Black, White, Grey and Yellow. I feel it gives it an edgier image with blocks that are different to the rest. I used "Bohemian Typewriter" for the page numbers on my double page spread. This was used to create different effects with the se of fonts so that that navigator stand out to the reader. I feel it worked well though! I used the font "impact" (in yellow so that page numbers would stand out) as the navigators on the contents page of and the heading for each section of the magazine was in Franklin Gothic Heavy. This was placed onto a grey background so that the reader could see it well and the information writing the same font (FGH) but in white to divide each part. I have used the same idea of boxes around my navigators like with the mast head and the main body information. Again, this was to blend in the theme of boxes and an edgier feel. Similarly to NME's and Kerrang's Block writing which shows a sturdy Font for their masthead's, one being faded and rocky and the other being Bold and simple but effective. I feel that some of the fonts I found reflected Fonts used that I had seen in NME and Kerrang which a hard and solid or serif to show a retro feel. Contrasting this to my evaluation of SMASH HITS! magazine which is girly, pop like and fun attracting a tweenie audience. NOT appealing to mine! On my font cover I also used a font that were hard to find whilst editing my front cover. I had to recover all of them and fix links I chose and ChromosomLight from http://www.fontstock.net/ . I used these font on my front cover as I felt they matched the theme of my magazine and looked distorted, similarly to KERRANG! It gave an edgy, rock feel to the front cover mix and matched with the party like image.
The three colours used on the front cover blends in and matches the theme of the issue of the magazine which rund throughout.
3 main fonts are used "Rockwell" ,"Frankiln Gothic Heavy" and "Impact". The others I used were pictures (JPEGS) that I pasted in as they were hard to format into the finished piece. I used these fonts as they were a mixture of serif and sans serif fonts to which will appeal to the audience as some are clear to read and other make it seem more attractive. NME use on basic font as seen on their front covers however, depending on the artist that features in that issue, the may change it, like with Lily Allen's issue.

These fonts are used for page numbers and strap lines. They are both simialr and feature at the bottom of the page so there is a running theme throughout.

I used these as main heading and to draw attention to the main navigators and main sells.

I used drop caps in the insert box of the contents page as many magazines use these to start an article.

I am happy with the fonts I used however disappoint that some of them I wanted to use didn't save, so I had to save them as JPGs.

4.Flat Plans

The front cover for my magazine I think works really well and is similar to other front covers like NME. As I used three block colours (back, white and red) it is bold and attractive to the audience and used points of power (rule of thirds) to place the image and the writing surrounding it.

It is very simple but includes all of the information/ navigators the reader needs in order to understand the content of the magazine.

The contents page includes all of the information on the front cover and some! I used an NME style contents page as a template/idea for my contents page, using drop caps for the body text information of the main article (double page spread) a subscription box and a band index. I wanted to use three images so that the reader will know whats in the magazine and act as a navigator with the page numbers next to them. Each section of the magazine is divided into four main headings box outlined in black and this features on the double page spread so that the reader knows they are on the right page for the article. THE NOISE! heading is features on every page as in Smash Hits and NME this is used as a navigator as well as to create a formality to look professional. Each page number is followed by the heading and brief text to explain what will be included on each page.

For my double page spread, I plan to make it have as much writing as possible. I want to use shapes like circles as an information box again to explain what will be in the article. This will act a little bit like a subheading, although there will be one above saying 'GUITAR,PEDAL, ACTION!'. This secludes the main body text used on the contents page which explains about the artist using a guitar and pedal to create his music. I included a song that the chosen artist put together for the magazine which is why the image with the clock will be used to resemble to song title 'Time'. The photograph will be the background of the double page and three other images uploaded to his MySpace page will be used as it was photographed by the same person. There will be credits for the writer (me) and the photographer at the end of the article and insert boxes that includes THE NOISE!'s website and the artists website. This is useful for the reader to find out more about the artist and increase his popularity as many articles do.

The word 'INTRODUCING' is used as the artist was founded by the noise and it is therefore the magazine introducing to the reader and the audience at the noise awards to NATHON P. His name is in the same font style used on the contents page to create formality and theme to his name.
